Crackdown on Illegal Posters

February 10, 2004 12:00 AM

Hundreds of illegally 'flyposted' signs have been removed from lampposts across Milton Keynes in the latest part of the Liberal Democrats' crackdown on litter.

Council staff, armed with cutters swooped to removed the mini-posters from lampposts across the city towards the end of last year, and the blitz is set to continue.

By law putting up these signs is a form of fly-posting and can attract a fine of up to £2,500 for EACH poster. The council has already made two successful prosecutions.

Cllr Douglas McCall, Liberal Democrat Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: "These signs are an eyesore, and when they distract drivers they can be dangerous. Last Autumn I came up with the idea of issuing cutters to Council and Cory staff so that they can take down these signs as they go about their normal duties such as street cleaning. This is proving very efficient and successful."

Anyone who spots these signs, or any other form of fly-posting, should contact the Environmental Helpline on (01908) 252570.
