Milton Keynes Council's interactive STREETCARE website has been highly commended in the Best Community Initiative category of APSE (Association for Public Service Excellence) Service Awards for 2005.
The STREETCARE interactive website was designed to make it easier for residents in Milton Keynes to report issues that concern them such as cracked pavements, faulty street lighting, overgrown trees or bushes, and dumped rubbish. The aim is also to make sure that services are co-ordinated and delivered to consistently high standards with the least amount of disruption.
The award judges were looking for evidence of excellence. The website was designed to be easy to use, available to everyone and jargon-free and to work efficiently. It was created in-house by the council's own IT experts without any extra funding and, since its inauguration in 2003, it has received over 200,000 hits. The website has already helped the council to reduce response times and develop a greater understanding of service issues. It has also created a closer community involvement in the delivery of highways, landscape and waste services.
Douglas McCall, Liberal Democrat cabinet Member for the Environment and Localities, commented: "STREETCARE is another example of the Council's commitment to continually improve its services and focus on customers' needs. The creation of the website is just part of a programme to better co-ordinate our services and encourage community responsibility."
