Driving Nuisance Cars Off Milton Keynes Roads

May 12, 2007 2:00 PM

A pilot scheme to remove nuisance cars from housing estates is proving to be so successful it is to be rolled out across the Borough.

The scheme was piloted in Conniburrow and the Lakes Estate for three months. In that time 51 vehicles were reported to The Council's Safer Communities Unit. Of these, 37 were identified as "nuisance vehicles". Notices were issued to their to start the process of removing them. All but four were subsequently disposed of or licenced by the owners. The Council scrapped the remaining ones.

Liberal Democrat Councillor, Douglas McCall, cabinet member for the environment, said: "I am delighted that the cabinet has agreed to extend the nuisance vehicle scheme throughout Milton Keynes. In the past, council officers could do nothing to remove such vehicles, even if ownership of the vehicle could be established. Now, under new legislation, vehicles can be impounded if they are not made roadworthy and taxed by the owners within seven days of a notice being served."

Anyone who spots an abandoned vehicle can call the Council's Dial-a-Wreck hotline on 01908 252277.
