Nick Clegg, Jill Hope and Douglas McCall meet community safety officers
The Liberal Democrat-run Council in Milton Keynes has just taken on two more community safety wardens to add to the team of 7 who are already producing excellent results. Lib Dems believe that community safety is not just about cutting crime, but also about making neighbourhoods cleaner. Nick Clegg was accompanied throughout the visit by the Lib Dem cabinet member for the environment, Douglas McCall. The work of the Community Safety Wardens is directed by the Council's Environment Directorate. Jill Hope, MK North PPC, also met the Community Safety Wardens.
The Liberal Democrat MP congratulated Milton Keynes for winning 'pathfinder status' from the Home Office. This will enable the Council to work with prolific offenders that have multiple problems. He was told that the Government has just cut £42,000 from its grant to the Community Safety Partnership. This amounts to an 18% cut in real terms and the Council has just asked Milton Keynes' two MPs to take this up.
Nick Clegg went on on to speak at a dinner for Liberal Democrat members at the Hilton Hotel.
