Work has started on the new Milton Keynes Coach Station, due to open in spring 2010.
After much anticipation, the new Coach Station is beginning to take shape. Passing traffic on the A509 and drivers entering Milton Keynes from the M1 will now be able to see the steel frame of the new Coach Station going up as building work has started on the iconic new structure. As a key gateway, the building will play an important role in welcoming people to Milton Keynes.
Since starting on site, 600 tonnes of soil have been removed from site with over 450 cubic metres of concrete being used for the foundations. (That's enough to fill the new swimming pool currently being built at Bletchley Leisure Centre!) 800 metres of steel will be used to create the frame of the building, with 300 square metres of glass and curtain walling. Overhanging this will be 700 square meters of cantilevered canopy, which is scheduled to be assembled in October.
The new Coach Station building is the last phase of the enhancements in the area following the Junction 14 area improvement scheme and public transport improvements.
Liberal Democrat councillor Alan Mallyon, cabinet member responsible for transport said: "It's exciting to see things progressing with the Coach Station, as it will play a key role in Milton Keynes Council's commitment to improving public transport and is integral to the longer-term strategy for Park & Ride. We are working well with Milton Keynes Partnership and with the builders, ROK, to ensure delivery of the new building."
