Lead organisations from across Milton Keynes recently joined forces in a workshop aimed at tackling fuel poverty among older and vulnerable people.
Advice about better insulation, general efficiency tips and making sure people know how to get the best energy deals were among the key topics thrashed out at the Affordable Warmth workshop at Milton Keynes Age Concern offices.
Organised by the United Sustainable Energy Agency, the seminar received input from Milton Keynes Council, Milton Keynes Age Concern, NHS Milton Keynes, and Milton Keynes Citizens Advice Bureau.
They looked closely at the current situation in Milton Keynes, including levels of fuel poverty, areas off the gas network, and properties with solid walls, as well as looking at the structure of Milton Keynes in terms of population, employment, health and housing.
The aim of the workshop was to develop the action plan for the Council's Affordable Warmth Strategy, examining what activities are already taking place in Milton Keynes and what work needs to be done in the future to help residents.
Liberal Democrat councillor Chris Williams, the the Council's cabinet member responsible for housing and adult social care, said: "Winter is approaching and there are many people already seeking advice about how to keep warm and the cost of heating. We can offer anybody who needs it very real and practical advice and help to ensure they are making of the best of their insulation and other ways of retaining heat. It is our intention to make as many people as possible fully aware of the services available to them as residents of the Borough."
Advice and help is at hand with the Affordable Warmth helpline, on 0800 1070044.
