Hundreds of extra car parking spaces are being made available in Central Milton Keynes to help shoppers in the run-up to Christmas.
The majority of the extra spaces - more than 900 - will be available on land near Milton Keynes railway station that is owned by London Midland. It is hoped also to run a weekend hopper bus service running from the station to the main shopping centre:mk. Parking officers for Milton Keynes Council have also been talking to other businesses to arrange for hundreds of other spaces normally used by their employees or weekday rail commuters to be made available for public parking at the weekends.
In central Milton Keynes there are already more than 21,000 parking spaces of which over 5,000 are free. Now in total there will be nearly 1,500 extra spaces available to cope with the Christmas shopping rush during December.
Liberal Democrat councillor Alan Mallyon, Milton Keynes Council's cabinet member responsible for parking, said: "The Council is keen to help shoppers and retailers during the Christmas rush. Identifying more than 1,500 extra parking spaces has only been made possible by the wonderful spirit of Christmas local companies have shown in making available parking spaces during December. And next year we will have a world class 'park and ride' scheme running from junction 14 of the M1 which will not just be for Christmas but for all year round."
