15-year Deal Signed on Recycling Facility

December 13, 2009 2:31 PM

Campaigner Marilou Spratt demonstrates the use of the new food waste recycling system. In a recent ceremony, Milton Keynes Council awarded the contract to manage the Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) in Old Wolverton to Community Waste Ltd until 2024.

With the capacity to process over 120,000 tonnes of recyclables per year and heavy investment in new technologies and processes, the facility looks well prepared to cope with the increased quantities of recyclables that will come as Milton Keynes continues to grow and we are able to recycle more and more materials.

Last year Milton Keynes residents recycled approximately 25,000 tonnes of waste, all of which was handled by the MRF, which sorts, separates and sends all the materials for recycling into new products.

Liberal Democrat councillor Mike Galloway, cabinet member for the environment, said " We chose Community Waste Ltd because they are committed to introducing new technology and new ideas that will allow our residents to recycle more and more of their waste. This has already begun with the introduction of the recycling of plastic food containers, waxed cartons and aerosols from September this year. Our priority is creating a good service for our residents that is easy to use and can deliver an effective and economic service that is able to deal with and increasing quantity of recyclable waste."

Increased recycling rates and better processing that comes from effective handling of recyclable materials reduces the need for landfill, lessens any potential fines or costs associated with landfill and minimises the harmful effects on the environment that comes from burying waste.
