Harrogate Oscar for Liberal Democrat Milton Keynes?

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 14th Oct 2005

Milton Keynes Council's social care directorate has gained a reputation for being a dab hand at film production. Following on from last year's success, Milton Keynes is one of only two of the 150 social services authorities that have been asked to make a film for the Annual Social Care Conference to be held in Harrogate later on in the year.

hbl media are helping make this year's short film, which is about the independence, security and well-being of older people living in Milton Keynes.

First stop for the filmmakers was Byerly House sheltered accommodation where residents Sylvia Griffiths and Jenny Skinner stepped into the spotlight to show how the community matron and the use of the community alarm had made such a difference to their lives.

After a close look at the issue of community safety and strategies to keep people safe in their own homes the final shoot of the day was the Extracare village under construction at Willen Park. Extracare is a unique concept in providing a complete 'care' village for older people. Prospective residents of the village Bob and Ruby Roberts were on hand to describe how much it means to them.

The day's filming was another excellent example of the Liberal Democrat Council's innovative approach to social care issues. Unfortunately it won't be showing at a cinema near you!
