"Thank you" to Tenants

Milton Keynes Council is running a publicity campaign throughout December to recognise those tenants who pay their rent on time and to make tenants aware of the help available if they are having difficulties paying their rent.

The Council's 'Rent First' service was set up to help tenants who are having difficulty paying their rent. Its success can be measured by the fact that 65% of council tenants now pay their rent on time, by comparison with only 50% a year ago. The number of court applications and evictions has also reduced.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Irene Henderson, cabinet member responsible for social care, housing and health, said: "If you are having difficulty paying your rent, 'Rent First' can help you to manage your bills and debts. They can contact the people you owe money to and help arrange lower repayments. They will also help check that you are claiming all the benefits you are entitled to.

"The 'Rent First' service has played an important role in reducing the Council's rent arrears. By encouraging tenants to have the confidence to seek advice before things get out of hand, we have helped many people avoid getting into further difficulties and even legal action. As a result, we have improved the efficiency of the service."
