You Can Now Get a Fairtrade Discount12.00.00am GMT Sat 28th Jan 2006 With Milton Keynes Fairtrade Forum and Sust! shop's joint discount scheme you can save money and do something to help make a better world. The scheme is open to schools, businesses and local organisations that would like to use Fairtrade products in their canteens or tea/coffee-making areas. From refreshing teas to stimulating coffees, smooth drinking chocolate, crunchy cereal bars, savoury snacks and divine chocolate you'll find plenty of quality yummy food and drink to keep your staff and members satisfied. Trade in tea and coffee may seem a remote issue during the morning coffee break but low prices can have a disastrous impact on the lives of small-scale farmers in the developing world. For many it means they do not earn enough to buy fertilisers, let alone replace any broken farm implements, nor have enough left over to meet their basic necessities. By using Fairtrade products, you know that farmers will receive a fair price for their produce and you will be helping to tackle world poverty. All you need to do to qualify for the discount is to serve two or more Fairtrade products at lunch or during tea/coffee breaks. A 10% discount is available on catering packs of coffee, tea and a wide range of other products. Milton Keynes Council is a supporter of Fairtrade and encourages staff to register with the scheme. Councillor Douglas McCall, Liberal Democrat cabinet member for the environment and localities said: "I am pleased that staff are supporting the scheme and are enjoying regular Fairtrade cuppas. Supporting Fairtrade is one way to make sure that workers receive decent pay and working conditions. "We have campaigned to raise awareness and encouraged people to participate in fair trade since 2002 and in October 2004 Milton Keynes received the prestigious award of Fairtrade Borough. Supporting Fairtrade is part of the Council's commitment to sustainable development."
