New Look for the Milton Keynes Central Library

10.56.00pm GMT Fri 15th Feb 2008

A major facelift for Milton Keynes central library is underway that will make the building brighter and more accessible for everyone who uses it.

Builders are giving the premises a brighter look, making it more accessible and improving the lobby area.

During the works the library is open as usual but some areas have restricted service. The reference library on the ground floor will be closed to visitors but a limited reference enquiry service will run from the local studies room, including access to the journal and newspaper collection. The upstairs adult and children's departments will only be accessible by stairs at the back of the building. The library will be closed to visitors for just two days - the 3rd and 4th March, but even on those days will offer a service via phone and e-mail for enquiries and renewals.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Euan Henderson, cabinet member responsible for the library service, said: 'In the 26 years since it was opened, over 30 million pairs of feet have come through the doors of our central library. So it's now time to refresh and modernise it. This will be good news in the medium term, and we are sorry for any inconvenience to customers in the short term.

"Once the work is completed, there will be an area for people to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee with friends, as well as computers in the lobby area for people who want to check something quickly on the Internet as they are passing."
