Liberal Democrats Launch Local Manifesto

11.31.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Sun 13th Apr 2008

The Liberal Democrats have just launched their manifesto for the 1 May local elections. Commenting on the manifesto, Liberal Democrat Leader, Isobel McCall, said: "Last year we made six key promises and we delivered on them all. The Liberal Democrats have made Milton Keynes a better place to live. This year, we are making five pledges:

  • Keep council tax rises to no more than inflation

  • Reduce anti-social behaviour

  • Improve GCSE results

  • Provide more affordable homes for rent

  • Make Milton Keynes even cleaner

"By delivering on these new pledges, we will make our Borough an even better place to live."

The list of Liberal Democrat candidates for the local elections has just been published. They are (sitting councillors marked with an asterisk):

Bletchley & Fenny Stratford - Alfred Vella

Bradwell - Phil Gerrella*

Campbell Park - Isabella Fraser*

Denbigh - Diane Ward

Eaton Manor - Edis Bevan

Emerson Valley - Derek Eastman

Loughton Park - John Napper

Middleton - Sam Crooks*

Newport Pagnell North - Mike Barry*

Newport Pagnell South - Douglas McCall*

Olney - Steve Clark*

Stantonbury - Bill Watts

Stony Stratford - Richard Brackenbury

All the sitting councillors are re-standing apart from Martin Snell. He is standing down as the councillor for Emerson Valley, due to poor health (Martin has recently had a serious back operation). Derek Eastman is standing in his place. Derek is already familiar with the ward, as his daughter and her family live there. Derek Eastman said: "I look forward to the campaign ahead. Martin will be a hard act to follow as he has been a very successful councillor for the past six years."
